Electric Purgatory: The Fate of the Black Rocker

This documentary film from Raymond Gayle examines “the struggles of the black rock musician and the stigma they face in the black community and the music industry.”  It features tons of great performance footage and interviews with journalists and musicians like Angelo Moore of Fishbone, Vernon Reid of In Living Color, and Cody ChesnuTT. Although the film is a bit rough around the edges, it’s got a lot of heart and certainly tackles an interesting and timely subject.  The success of bands like TV on the Radio (one white guy) and Bloc Party (fronted by a black guy) might signal a shift toward an acceptance of more rockers of color.  Watch it here, or by all means go buy a copy.

And here’s the Saturday Night Live performance that first made me a Fishbone fan.

If they were all on acid, I’d watch more baseball

In addition to making kick-ass apparel and artwork, the folks at No Mas have apparently gotten into the kick-ass animated short business.  Enjoy.

The king is dead. Long live the king.

It’s a sad day for fans of basketball and hilarity.  Bill Walton announced his retirement from broadcasting because of persistent back problems.  I can’t believe that NBA fans will no longer be exposed to brilliant commentary like this anymore.

Congrats, North Carolina

Welcome back from the fucking stone ages.

For more than 10 years, North Carolina law required teachers to tell teenagers they were “expected” to abstain from “sexual activity outside of marriage.” But abstinence-only education didn’t have the lasting effect on teenagers that lawmakers hoped.

According to the state health department, from 2003 to 2007, the teen pregnancy rate rose more than 12 percent. North Carolina now has the ninth-highest teen pregnancy rate in the country.

Beginning with the 2010 school year, school districts must begin offering broader information, which includes lessons on contraceptives and preventing sexually transmitted diseases. Parents can elect to remove their children from these lessons.
